A Look at the History of Volleyball

William G. Morgan, a physical director from the Holyoke YMCA in Massachusetts, is the man that is responsible for creating volleyball in 1895. It was originally developed as an indoor sport for those businessmen that found basketball, which had been created in 1891, too vigorous.

Morgan originally named the sport “mintonette”, but then a Springfield College professor noted the volleying aspect of the sport and put forward the name “volleyball”. The original rules of the game were developed by Morgan and these were printed for the first time in 1897. The game attracted players of both sexes from schools, the army, and other organisations across the US, and it was then introduced to different countries around the world.

The first nationwide volleyball tournament in the US was carried out by New York City’s National YMCA Physical Education Committee in 1922. In 1928, the United States Volleyball Association, known then as the USVBA and now known as the USAV, was created in 1928 and they became the governing body for the sport in the US. The USAV have conducted men’s volleyball championships since 1928, while women’s volleyball championships came into being in 1977.

American troops introduced volleyball to Europe during WWI, and this was when national organisations were developed. The Fédération Internationale de Volley Ball, known as the FIVB, came into being in Paris back in 1947, and moved to Lausanne in Switzerland in 1984. Come the late 20th century, the FIVB had more than 210 members.

European volleyball championships were dominated by teams from Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Polish, Soviet Union, and Romanian teams. Teams from the Soviet Union have won more world and Olympic titles than any other nation. When it comes to volleyball in North, Central, and South America, international teams such as Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, and the US lead the way. In Asia, Japan and China are the dominant forces, while in the South Pacific the Australian and New Zealand national teams are the ones to beat.

The first volleyball World Cup was held in 1969, and the FIVB decided that there should be a 4-year cycle of international volleyball competitions. This cycle, apart from the World Cup, includes the likes of the Olympic Games and regional events (Asian Games, European Championships, Pan American Games, Africa Games).

Beach volleyball, which, as the name implies, is played on sand, and came into being in 1930 in California. The very first beach volleyball event was held at Will Rogers State Beach in 1948, and the FIVB sanctioned the first beach volleyball event in Rio de Janeiro in 1986. Volleyball was added to the Olympics in 1964, and beach volleyball was added for first time at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Difference Between Beach and Indoor Volleyball

Some people that are new to the world of volleyball might think that beach volleyball and indoor volleyball are pretty much the same, but this is not the case. It is important that you understand the differences that exist between both volleyball variants, so this is what we are going to take a look at now.

Indoor volleyball has six players per team, while beach volleyball only has two players on a team. Therefore, you will not be too surprised to hear that beach volleyball has smaller courts that measure 16m by 8m, while indoor courts are 18m by 9m. Additionally, the balls that are used in beach volleyball are lighter and bigger than those that are used in indoor volleyball.

Scoring is also different in the two different varieties. Beach volleyball has 3 sets of 21 points, with two sets effectively needed to win a match – if it is 1-1 in sets, the third and final set is played to 15 points. Indoor volleyball, on the other hand, is the best out of five, with 25 points required to win a set. If a fifth set is needed to determine the winner, then it is the first to 15 points. In both beach and indoor volleyball, a team needs to be two clear points ahead to win a set.

How do we choose

the best betting sites for volley ball?

There are numerous bookmakers out there that sports betting fans in the United Kingdom can create an account with in order to place boxing bets.

For new sports gamblers, choosing can be quite a challenging task, but we have done all the analysis for you.

Below we will explain the different aspects of a sportsbook that we analyse when we are deciding whether a particular bookie is worth recommending to our readers.

Volleyball Tournaments to Keep an Eye on

If you happen to be new to the world of volleyball betting, then you might not be sure about the major competitions that you can bet on. If this is a category that you fall into, do not worry as we are now going to give you a brief overview of the most popular volleyball events. Although these are the most popular ones, there are plenty of other volleyball events that we are not going to discuss that you can bet on.

Olympics

One of the major volleyball tournaments is the Summer Olympics that are held once every four years. Whenever the Summer Olympics are held, there are beach and indoor volleyball events. There are events for men and women, with Brazil, the former Soviet Union, and the United States being the most successful men’s teams, while China, the former Soviet Union, and Cuba are the most successful women’s teams.

FIVB World Championship

The FIVB World Championship also takes place every four years, and it is an international competition that has been played since 1949. It takes place two years after each Summer Olympics and sees 24 teams face each other for the right to be crowned champions of the world. In the men’s and women’s events, the former Soviet Union and Russia are the most successful teams, having won the title six and seven times respectively.

FIVB World Cup

While this event is not as important as the aforementioned World Championships, it is still a competition that is highly regarded among volleyball players and fans. This event is also held once every four years, and will be played the following year after a Summer Olympics. There are only six teams that take part in this tournament for both sexes, with Brazil being the most successful men’s team and China being the most successful female team.

Betting on Volleyball

Volleyball can be a very entertaining sport to watch because there is plenty of talent on show, especially at the events that we just mentioned above. However, you can make things even more entertaining by placing a bet on the action. When it comes to volleyball betting, you can jump right in (no pun intended) and place a bet without making use of any strategy, but do not be too surprised if you end up losing more money than you win. Placing random wagers might work once in a blue moon, but more often than not you are just going to end up being a loser.

Therefore, we decided that we would try to help you out by providing you with some very handy volleyball betting tips that you can make use of whenever you are planning on placing a bet on this sport.

Research is Key

The best favour that you can do for yourself when betting on volleyball, or any sport for that matter, is to do some research on what you are gambling on. The main advantage that sports bettors have over casino game players is that most outcomes are people-driven and not pure chance. Therefore, the more that you know about a team or player, the more you can understand about how they react to different situations or certain opponents.

There are many factors that can have an influence on the result of a volleyball game. For instance, a new partnership can be challenging, while a grueling schedule or an injury can hamper a side’s chances of getting a win. So, what is the best way to do volleyball research? Well, to begin with, watching plenty of volleyball and getting a thorough understanding of the sport is something that is highly beneficial. Additionally, keeping an eye on the results, even if you do not watch the games will not hurt. Surrounding yourself in volleyball and following tournaments closely is something that allows you to make a more educated bet when betting on this sport.

 Look at Volleyball Stats

Even if you do not get round to watching plenty of volleyball, just following the latest results will provide you with a much clearer picture of significant play patterns. Taking a look at stats can give you an idea as to the strengths and weaknesses of a team. For instance, if a team that has a very strong service game will be playing against a side that has a weak service game, then you should expect the team with the strong service to dominate.

Thanks to the Internet, there is plenty of information available to you, so you would be foolish not to make good use of it.  For example, in men’s beach volleyball, no team has defended their Olympic Gold, so although the previous winners might be the favourites going into an event, they might be available at odds that are too low when this information is considered.

On the flip side, combing stats with watching games is something that can turn out to be very useful. For instance, a team that has been winning a lot recently will probably have low odds, but if you have watched them play, you might have seen a number of flaws in the play or seen that they have been getting lucky, which means that it might be better for you to bet against them as the odds will be better.

Favourites Can Be Beaten

A common trend in sports betting is that the most popular teams often end up with short odds. While some teams often dominate a sport, they do not win all of the time, and when teams are seen as dead certs, bookies will shorten their odds to limit any losses if the team performs as expected.

Back in 2013, everyone was expecting Trentino to win their 5th Club World Championship in a row, with them being huge favourites with the bookies. However, they struggled throughout the tournament and were eventually beaten 3-1 in the semi-finals by Novosibirsk, who then went on to get thrashed in the final by Sada.

So, favourites do not always go on win, which is what makes sport so great. Therefore, betting on a team just because they are the favourites is not a surefire way to win money.

Predict First and Bet Later

While it is vital that you look for value when you are betting, you should try to avoid selecting a bet based purely on the odds that you see. Whenever you can, make your volleyball match predictions first and then look for the best odds for the outcome that you expect to happen. If you let the odds that are on offer convince you, then all the research you have done, and your volleyball knowledge becomes obsolete. Of course, it is vital to look for overpricing and good value, but just be certain that you can back the odds on offer with a sound mind.

Do Not Chase Your Losses

An important rule to follow when gambling, whether that is betting on sports or playing casino games, is to never chase your losses. Even if you lose five bets in a row, it does not mean that your next bet will be a winner. Your next bet does not care whether your previous bet was a winner or loser.

You should never bet more money than you can afford to lose. We all love to win whenever we gamble, but just ensure that if your bet goes on to lose, you do not feel the loss too much. You should also never think about doubling your wagers to cover any previous losses that you have had. Betting on sports is meant to be a method of entertainment, so by all means get the thrill that comes from betting on the latest volleyball tournament, but make sure you are not out of pocket if your bet fails to win.

Popular Volleyball Bets

Above we have just given you some useful tips for volleyball betting, and now we shall take a look at some popular volleyball betting markets that you can bet on when gambling on this sport. When it comes to volleyball betting, you can find plenty of markets that will help to keep you thoroughly entertained. So, keep reading to find out all you need to know about the popular volleyball markets that are available.

Match result: With this type of bet, you are just trying to predict the outcome of a match. A lot of people prefer betting on a match result in volleyball instead of other team sports because there is no chance of the match ending in a draw. If you choose a team and they go on to win, you win your bet, it is as simple as that.

Outright winner: Rather than placing a bet on a single game, you can put a bet on a team to win the whole tournament. If they go on to do so, you win your wager. If they do not lift the trophy, your stake is lost.

Sets Handicap: Sometimes a team will be very high favourites to win a game, so the odds for them will probably not be to your liking. Therefore, to boost the odds a bit, you can place a set handicap bet of -1.5, which means that they have to win the match by two clear sets in order for your wager to be successful. Likewise, if the underdog has odds that are too high for your liking, you can give them a +1.5-set handicap, meaning they just have to not lose by two sets.

Set betting: If you enjoy mixing things up a bit, then you might want to try set betting. With this type of bet, you just bet on the team that you think will go on to win a particular set. Your chosen team just has to win the set that you said they would win – it does not matter if they eventually go on to lose the match.

Total points: You can place a bet on the total points that will be scored in a match. The minimum points that can be scored is 75, but this is pretty much impossible as it means that the losing team did not score a single point. Indoor volleyball games often tend to have around 136 points, so markets such as under/over 140 are often offered by bookies.

Total sets: If you are not sure what team will go on to win a match, or just want to stay neutral while watching it, placing a bet on the number of sets in the game is a good way to go. If you think that it is going to be a tight match, then put your money on there being five sets. However, if you think one team will win comfortably, then put your money on just the three sets.

Best Bonuses and Free Bets for Volleyball Betting

If you are looking for competitive industries, then it is safe to say that you will not find many that are more competitive than the sports betting one. The competitive nature of this industry is bad for bookies, but something that us sports bettors should welcome with open arms as it is what compels sportsbooks to offer enticing bonuses to their customers so that they stay relevant. Bookmakers are aware that if they do not offer an attractive Welcome Bonus then they will not see new punters opening an account with them.

Some sports bettors like to say that bonuses are all pretty much alike and it does not matter what one you go for, but this is completely wrong. When you spend time in the world of sports betting, you will encounter bonuses that are much better than others that you come across. In fact, there will be some bonuses that you encounter that will not be worth any of your precious time. This is the reason why it is vital that you do a bit of research before committing to any bookmaker and the bonus that they have on offer. Below we have provided you with four bookies that have the best bonuses around at the moment that can be used to bet on volleyball.

888sport: If you decide to open an account with 888sport, you will be treated to a 100% match bonus up to the value of £100. So, if you opt to make a first deposit of £100 in your new account, you will be given a total of £200 to spend. You can use your extra bonus money on whatever sports you like, but we recommend that you use it on some volleyball markets.

William Hill: If you register an account with William Hill, then you will be given two free bets that are worth £15 each as a thank you for joining them. You can use the two free bets on any sport, but we suggest that you use at least one of them on volleyball betting since that is obviously what you are interested in, or you would not be reading this guide still.

Unibet: If you open an account with Unibet, there is a £40 money back bonus up for grabs. With this bonus, you just need to place a wager with a value of up to £40, and if it is a losing bet, your stake will be returned to you as a free bet. We do suggest that you use this free bet on volleyball, but you are free to use it on whatever sport market you like.

Bwin: If you register with Bwin, then they will thank you by giving you a £20 money back bonus. This is the same bonus type as the Unibet one above, but the maximum value of your initial wager is £20. If your bet loses and you get a £20 free bet, you can use it on whatever sport you feel like.

N.B. Online bookies have to change the bonuses that they offer quite regularly as this is how they manage to stay relevant. A bookmaker that has an attractive bonus is going to get more new customers register than one that has a poor bonus, and any bookie worth its salt knows this. Thus, we cannot guarantee that the four offers we just explained above will be available when you go to their respective sites to sign up. We apologise if this is the case, but we cannot spend all our time constantly looking for bonus updates.

Another thing that we really want to highlight before we move on with this guide is that you should read the T&Cs that are attached to a bonus before claiming it. By reading the various terms that apply, you will find out about the wagering requirements, the min deposit for claiming the bonus, the number of days you have to make use of the bonus, and so on. Read every T&C carefully to decrease the odds of you making a mistake that forfeits your bonus.

Where to Find the Best Volleyball Odds

Sportsbooks will often have different odds because they know that they can stay a step ahead of their rivals if they have enticing odds. A bookie that offers the best odds for a variety of markets is one that punters will be happy to register with, while a sports betting site that has low odds for the markets, they offer is one that people will turn their noses up at.

Before you register with a bookmaker, you have to do a little bit of research to make sure that the odds they are offering you are at least competitive with what other bookies are offering. You will only get true value for your money by using good odds. We are sure that when you go to buy other products in a shop or online that you do a bit of research to make sure that you are getting a good deal, so why not do the same when you are going to be spending money at a bookmaker?

We shall now provide you with an example to show you just how vital it is that you make use of good odds whenever you are gambling. Let us say that you have found a volleyball game that you would like to place bets on, and you look at the odds that are being offered for one of the teams to win. You see that Bookmaker A has given the team odds of 2.30 to win, while bookmaker B has them at odds of 2.50 to win. If you go ahead and place a £10 wager with Bookmaker A, and your chosen team wins, you will make a £13 profit, while if you put the same stake on the team to win with Bookmaker B, and they go on to win, you will make a £15 profit. Now, missing out on £2 is definitely not the end of the world, but if you lose £2 with every winning bet you make, it could soon add up.

So, what sports betting websites do we suggest you take a look at when it comes to odds for volleyball? Well, we feel that the following four bookies are a good place to start:

Volleyball Live Betting

Betting on sports became a lot easier in the 90s when bookmakers transitioned to the Internet. While this now meant that sports bettors could place bets on sports without having to get dressed and leave the house, there was something missing, and this was live betting. If you are new to betting on sports, then there is a chance that you are not sure what a live bet is. Well, for the uninitiated among us, a live bet is one that you make when the event is still in action. However, technology and online sportsbooks have improved a lot since then, and now you will find a live betting platform at every serious bookmaker.

Bookmakers know that customers enjoy making live bets and they are aware that a failure to offer a good live betting arena is something that potential customers will look negatively upon. While the majority of bookies nowadays will have some sort of live betting platform, some are much better than the others. If you are the type of person that enjoys making live bets on volleyball, then we suggest you take a closer look at these bookies:

This volleyball betting review has given you a lot of useful information to take in, and we really hope that it goes on to help you have a fruitful volleyball betting experience.
