🏠 Overview of England

England will always be one of the best teams in world rugby due to the number of players that they have at their disposal, but their 2022 really was one that England fans will want to forget pretty quickly. They played a total of 12 games in 2022, and they won just the five, losing six and drawing one. Their performances were definitely under par, and it ended up leading to the demise of Eddie Jones, who picked up three Six Nations titles in the seven years that he was in charge. Steve Borthwick, who won the premiership title with Leicester Tigers last year, has been appointed as the new England boss. Whether he will have any meaningful success with the England national team is something we are going to have to wait and see.

At the end of the 2022 Six Nations, England finished third in the table, level with Scotland on points, but placed higher due to a superior points difference. While finishing in third place would not usually be the end of the world, their lacklustre performances and the fact that France, the Champions, finished a whopping 15 points ahead was just not good enough. Their first match of the competition was at Murrayfield against Scotland, and a late penalty from Finn Russell downed them 20-17. In their second match they beat the Italians 33-0, and then they beat the Welsh at Twickenham. They were then comfortably beaten by Ireland and France, meaning they won just the two matches from their five.

Last July, England went to Australia to play against them in three test matches. England, under Jones, had a really good record against the Wallabies, having won eight matches in a row against them. However, they lost that winning streak in the first match of the series as the Wallabies won the game 30-28. The following week, England managed to level the scores courtesy of a 25-17 win, and they won the series the following weekend with a 21-17 win in Sydney.

This series win against Australia gave them plenty of confidence heading into their 2022 Autumn Internationals where they were scheduled to play New Zealand, Argentina, South Africa, and Japan. However, their very first game did not go to plan as they conceded a late penalty against the Pumas to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Their second game saw them take on the Japanese, and they managed to put 50 points on their opponents for a very comfortable win. They then took on New Zealand and it looked like they were heading to yet another defeat, but 19 unanswered points in the final ten minutes saw them claim a memorable draw. Their final match of 2022 was against the Springboks, and the Saffers picked up a comfortable win.

With the relatively inexperienced Borthwick in charge, we are not entirely sure how England will play in this year's 6 Nations, but we are expecting some better play overall. A huge criticism of England under Jones was that they kicked the ball far too much leading to boring rugby, so we hope that Borthwick will kick that into touch and try and get his side playing some exciting running rugby.

⭐ England Star Players to Watch

An England manager will always have plenty of players to select from, and some of these will be the best players in the rugby world. Their huge pool of talented players is exactly why you should never write England off, regardless of their form. If they show up on the day, then they have the ability to beat anyone really comfortably. In the table below, you can find three England players to look out for in the 2023 Six Nations.

Maro ItojeLock5620Great in the air and a beast at the breakdown
Tom CurryFlanker4620Strong, great at turnovers, and a really good carrier of the ball

✈️ Overview of Scotland

Scotland had a pretty average 2022. In fact, it was probably the kind of year that a rugby fan would expect from a Scotland team. From the 12 games that they played in 2022, they won five and lost seven. While other nations decided to sack their manager for such numbers, the SRU decided that it was best to keep Gregor Townsend until the end of his contract after the 2023 Rugby World Cup. There have been reports that he wants to join France when his Scotland contract expires.

They got their 2022 6 Nations off to a great start with a win against England at Murrayfield. However, despite this quality start, their only other win came against Italy, a team that they would have expected to beat rather comfortably. They then lost to Wales, France, and Ireland to end up finishing in 4th place in the table. However, if truth be told, many Scottish rugby fans probably did not care that much since they at least got one over on England.

Scotland's summer tour saw them take a trip down to Argentina to play the Pumas in three Test matches. Argentina won the first game of the tour 26-18, while Scotland claimed a win in the second Test to level the series. In the final game, the Scots were just seconds away from being able to claim a series win, but a very late try from Emiliano Boffelli ended up breaking Scottish hearts. Despite the series defeat, it was a really good series to watch as it was full of drama right up until the end.

They started their 2022 Autumn international campaign with the hope that they could at least end the year on some sort of high, but in their first game they lost to the Aussies by a single point. They beat Fiji in their second match, but it really was not a performance that they could be proud of as it was full of errors. Their third match was against the All Blacks, and they gave them a bit of a scare, but still ended up losing 31-23. Their final game of the season was against Argentina, and they got a bit of revenge courtesy of a 52-19 victory. However, it must be said that Argentina has a man sent off early and played portions of the match with only 12 players.

If the Scots manage to play against England in the same manner that they played against Argentina or New Zealand, and England put in a lacklustre performance, then there is a chance that Scotland will retain the Calcutta Cup.

⭐ Scotland Star Players to Watch

Scotland have developed a number of quality players, and thanks to residence rules they have some quality Australians, South Africans, and New Zealanders at their disposal. Below are three Scottish players to watch closely when Scotland play in the 2023 Six Nations.

Finn RussellFlyhalf65257Top kicking skills, quality passer, and a great tackler

🥇 Who Will Win? England vs Scotland Prediction

So, who do we think will go on to win this match between England and Scotland? Well, usually we would tell you to take a look at current form, but since is practically a derby match, form is something that will go out of the window. When you take a close look at both squads, it is clear that England have the better players, while the fact that they will be playing at home could be a huge advantage. Therefore, with this in mind, we think that Borthwick will manage to get his England career off to winning ways - we think England will win by at least 7 points.

Our match prediction: England to win.
