All You Need to Know about Six Nations

Rugby Six Nations betting

This tournament was first played in 1883, but back then it was known as the Home Nations Championship as only England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland participated in it. However, in 1888 and 1889 England were not allowed to participate due to the fact that they refused to become part of the International Rugby Football Board. In 1910, France was added to the competition, and so the tournament became known as the Five Nations Championship. Then, in 2000, Italy was added, and the event became known as the Six Nations Championship.

After the relative success of Tier 2 Nations at the Rugby world Cup in 2015, there were calls from the President of Europe, Octavian Morariu, to allow Romania and Georgia to be allowed to play in the Rugby Six Nations, but these calls have not been answered yet. Due to the fact that Italy often finish bottom of the Six Nations table, there have been yearly calls for there to be a promotion and relegation structure where the winner of the European Nations Cup, the second tier of rugby in Europe, replaces the team that finishes at the bottom from all the Six Nations results. This is yet to be done, but if Italy carry on stagnating, then it is likely that this will eventually happen.

The Structure of the Tournament

The tournament starts on the first weekend of February and ends on Super Saturday on the second or third Saturday of March. The tournament's format is really easy: all of the six teams play each other once, meaning that there are a total of 15 matches in the competition. Home advantage alternates each year, meaning that if England play France at Twickenham one year, the following year they will take on France at the Stade de France.

Before the 2017 edition, two points were given for wins, one for draws, and zero for a loss. At the end of 2016, the Six Nations declared that they would trial a bonus point system in the 2017 edition. This system is pretty much the same that is used in many rugby tournaments - a team gets four points for a win, two for a draw, zero for a loss, 1 bonus point for score four tries in a match and one losing bonus point for losing by seven points or fewer. If a team wins a Grand Slam, they are given an extra three points to make sure that they cannot finish with less points than another team because of bonus points.

Before 1994, if teams finished on equal points, they would both be declared as Six Nations winners. However, since then, if teams are tied, then the title will be given to the side that has the better points difference. If the teams have the same points difference, then the team with the most tries in the Championship will be declared the winners. If the teams are tied on tries, then it will be a shared championship.

The Wooden Spoon is metaphorically given to the team that comes in last place. Since the 2000 Six Nations fixtures, only Ireland and England have not finished last. Italy have claimed the Wooden Spoon 15 times and have lost all five matches in a tournament no fewer than 11 times.

The Different Trophies Up for Grabs

There are a number of different trophies up for grabs and we are going to take a close look at these now.

Championship Trophy

The Six Nations winners are given the Championship Trophy. The trophy was formulated by the Earl of Westmorland and was presented to the winners for the first time in 1993. It is made from sterling silver and was created by James Brent-Ward and a team of silversmiths from William Comyns, a firm from London.

The trophy has 15 side panels that represents the 15 players of a team, and it has three handles that represent the three different officials. It has a 3.75-litre capacity, meaning that it can fit five bottles of champagne in it. In the mahogany base, there is a secret drawer that contains six different finials, each one being a silver replica of the team emblems and these can be screwed on to the detachable lid.

A new trophy came into being for the 2015 edition, and this one was designed and made by Thomas Lyte silversmiths. Ireland was the last side to lift the old trophy and they were the first team to lift the new one. The current holders of this trophy are Wales as they were the winners of the Six Nations 2021.

Grand Slam & Triple Crown

If a team wins all of their five matches, then they will win the Grand Slam. The Triple Crown can only be won by one of England, Scotland, Wales, or Ireland. A team wins the Triple Crown when they beat the other three home nations. The Triple Crown goes back to the Home Nations Championship, but the physical trophy has only been awarded since 2006, which is when the Royal Bank of Scotland commissioned Hamilton and Inches to create a trophy. Since then, it has been won four times by Wales and Ireland and England have won it three times.

Rivalry Trophies

There are a number of individual trophies between teams:

  • Calcutta Cup: This is given to the team that wins a match between England and Scotland. England have won it 71 times and Scotland have won it 41 times - it was first awarded way back in 1879.
  • Centenary Quaich: The winner between Ireland and Scotland claims this trophy. Ireland have won it 18 times while Scotland have won it 14 times since it was introduced back in 1989.
  • Millennium Trophy: This has been awarded to the winner between Ireland and England since 1988. The former has won it 14 times, while the latter have won it 20 times.
  • Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy: This is given to the winner of France versus Italy and the French have won it 13 times while the Italians have won it two times. It was first awarded back in 2007.
  • Auld Alliance Trophy: This is given to the team that wins between France and Scotland. It was first awarded in 2018, and Scotland have won it three times to France's one.
  • Doddie Weir Cup: This trophy came into existence in 2018 and is given to the winner of Wales and Scotland. The Welsh have won it three times, while the Scots have won it once.

Us humans are always on the lookout for the best deals when we are spending money, so when it comes to sports betting, we should always have a look to see which bookies are offering the best odds. The winning team in the Six Nations gets a nice cash prize, and if you bet using Six Nations rugby betting odds that are some of the best around, then you can also make a tidy cash sum.

To make things a bit clearer to you, we shall now give you a brief example. Let us say that England are playing Scotland in the Six Nations and you want to bet on a match winner. You take a look at the Six Nations betting odds and find that one bookie has England to win at odds of 1.80, while another bookmaker has given them odds of 1.90 to win.

If you decide to stick a tenner on England with the first bookie and England do win the game, then you will walk away with a profit of £8. If you slap a tenner on England to win with the second bookmaker, then you will land a profit of £9. Now, we know that missing out on a quid is not going to be a life-changing event, but if you make a lot of winning bets in a year and you miss out on at least a quid each time, then you will eventually end up missing out on a tidy sum.

So, what sportsbooks out there have quality rugby Six Nations betting odds? Well, when it comes to quality odds for rugby betting, we really do recommend that you have a look at the following sports betting sites:

Live Sports Betting on the Rugby Six Nations

When sports betting first became available online in the 90s, there was not the possibility of placing live wagers. If you felt like betting on a rugby event such as the Six Nations, you would have to do so before the action began. However, technology has changed so much in the last couple of decades, and now most the bookies that you will encounter will have a live betting arena.

Placing live bets is something that the majority of sports betting fans around the world enjoy doing, which is why you will find it really hard to find a bookmaker that lacks live betting. Bookies know that if they do not have some type of live betting arena available then they could end up losing out on a lot of customers. We are pretty certain that you will want to place live rugby bets every now and then, so below we have listed four sports betting sites that we believe will offer you a top-quality live gambling experience.

When you are looking for a great live betting feature, what do you have to pay close attention to. Well, to begin with, a live arena can only ever be as good as the odds and markets that are available. A sports betting site that offers online a handful of live markets is one that live betting fans will get bored of pretty quickly. Additionally, we previously mentioned that it is important to have good odds when making bets, and this rule does not disappear when you are placing live bets. You will definitely not be let down by the live betting arenas of the four bookmakers we listed above for you.

Six Nations Sports Betting Tips

You can jump right in and start betting on the Six Nations if you like, but if you do this then there is a chance that you will end up losing quite a bit of money. Below we have provided you with some Six Nations betting tips that we highly recommend you take heed of before you start betting on this fantastic rugby tournament or how to bet online in general.

Take the Venue into Account

This is something you need to pay close attention to, especially if you are going to be making a bet on a team to lift the title. In many tournaments, teams will play each other away and at home, but not in the Six Nations. This was not as vital when there were just five teams, but it is now that there are six teams as this means that some teams will play three matches at home while others will only get two games at home.

When you are betting on this event, it is vital to look at the records of the different teams. The likes of England and Wales have really good home records, while Scotland usually struggle away from home. Italy lose home or away, but their games are more competitive when they play at home.

Team Selection Is Important

It is wise to keep an eye on team news and this is something that applies to any sport. If a team are at full strength, then that will obviously increase their odds of being successful. If they happen to be missing a number of key players, their chances of winning will diminish. There are also some good ways of improving your chances if you bet using the Both Teams To Score strategy.

How Important Is the Game?

This is more important to look at towards the end of the tournament. A team that starts poorly will not be able to win the title, so they may start to experiment with their line-up. In this case, they would bring in some new players with the hope of improving and building towards the next edition. Thus, once again, it is vital to look at team news before you make a bet.

Conclusion: Should You Bet on the Six Nations Rugby Championship?

When it comes to rugby betting, there are plenty of different events that you can bet on, but we really do recommend that you place bets on the Six Nations. Why do we recommend this? Well, it is a highly entertaining rugby tournament that is full of passion from all six teams, and you can boost the entertainment levels tenfold by betting on the action. There really is nothing better than watching your favourite team win a rugby match and getting some money to boot as well.

We feel that all the information that we have given you in this guide will stand you in good stead when it comes to betting on rugby events such as the Six Nations.
