What to Anticipate in the January Transfer Window
10/01/2025 17:04:54The 2025 January transfer window is now officially open and will last until the end of the month. It gives Premier League clubs the chance to strengthen their squads as they head into the second half of the season and look to achieve their goals, whether that be winning the title, fighting relegation or challenging for European football.
Signing desired players in January is often challenging, as clubs are hesitant to let players depart mid-season. They fear losing their momentum or being unable to find suitable replacements, given that other teams are also reluctant to sell. It is a difficult month to get activity done so clubs have to be smart and strategic when it comes to bringing in players in the January transfer window. Below we will look at some of the current transfer rumours as we head into the transfer window.
Confirmed Transfers
There have already been two confirmed transfers that were agreed before the window opened. Brighton have completed a £11 million pound deal to bring in Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez. He is a dynamic midfielder who will bring creativity to Brighton’s midfield. Tottenham Hotspur have also already completed the signing of 18 year old South Korean winger Yang Min-Hyeok from Gangwon. He is expected to bring pace and Spurs will hope the young winger can develop.
Transfer Rumours
Arsenal: It is no secret that Arsenal are in need of a world class number 9 and have been linked with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, although any bid seems like it would come in the summer. Arsenal are reportedly considering a loan move for Bayern Munich winger Kinsley Coman following an injury to Bukayo Saka.
Man City: With Rodri out for the remainder of the season there is speculation that they will bring in midfield reinforcements in January. Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is a name currently being linked with the Premier League champions.
Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs are reportedly exploring a loan move for England and Man City winger Jack Grealish who has struggled for form this year, failing to score a club goal in the calendar year.
Liverpool: It is unlikely Liverpool will enter the January transfer window with Arne Slot said to be happy with his current squad. Current rumours surrounding the club are focused on outgoings, with Liverpool recently rejecting an approach from Real Madrid for Trent Alexander Arnold whose contract is out in the summer. Fulham have also been linked with a move for Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo, as Fulham look to strengthen their midfield after the departure of Joao Palhinha in the summer.
Brighton: Rumours surrounding Brighton are also in the form of departures with Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler hinting that Irish striker Evan Ferguson who has struggled for playing time this season. Fulham and Manchester United have been previously linked with the striker, as well as clubs in the championship.
Newcastle: The Magpies are considering selling full back Kieran Trippier in order to balance their finances. Clubs from Turkey, Italy and Spain have shown interest in the 34 year old Englishman who has found himself behind Tino Livramento in the pecking order at the club.

Transfer Window Details
The Premier League transfer window is opened from January 1st and will officially close on the 3rd February at 23:00 GMT. Clubs are expected to be active in the window right up until the deadline.
As the window progresses, more deals and rumours are likely to become clear.
