Tyson Fury suffered his second professional defeat at the weekend, once again losing to WBA, WBC and WBO Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Usyk by unanimous decision. Earlier this year he lost to Usyk by split decision.

Fury was undefeated as a boxer but now has had back-to-back defeats and Usyk has proven to be the stronger fighter. The British pro boxer is now 36 years of age and has hinted at retirement on multiple occasions over the last number of years, often announcing retirement after fights before changing his mind.

Indeed, boxing means a lot to Fury and he has mentioned that training for fights is key to his mental health.

Will Fury Continue Fighting?

Fury was convinced he won the fight versus Ukranian Oleksandr Usyk, as were a lot of fans. After the fight, he was reluctant to provide any hints as to if this defeat to Usyk would be the end of his boxing career.

There is no suggestion that he might retire and a close fight with the heavyweight champion of the world that he could have won shows he is still a force in the heavyweight division.

As mentioned, boxing is Fury’s life, and he will likely continue boxing to give himself a sense of purpose and keep his mind focused as he is constantly in a battle with his mental health.

He is certainly in the twilight of his boxing career, but he has shown he is still capable and certainly has a few fights left in him.

Who Will He Fight Next?

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn believes Anthony Joshua is the only meaningful opponent left for Fury and the all British fight has that box office appeal that is needed for boxing and also would sell out Wembley.

Both fighters are coming off losses, following Joshua's knock out by Daniel Dubois in October. That was the 4th defeat of Joshua’s career having also lost to Andy Ruiz Junior and Oleksandr Usyk twice.

However, it would still remain a big pay day for the rivals with domestic bragging rights on the line. Importantly, they would both be available, in similar positions and there are no titles to complicate negotiations.

Previously they were negotiating a fight but Fury had a contract for a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder so negotiations were put on hold. Over the years neither side has been able to make an agreement on a fight but with both at similar points in their careers after defeats. The fight seems logical for both, but the loser would likely see their career over, with too many losses on their record.

There has been talk of Vladimir Klitschko coming out of retirement and a fight with Fury would be very likely, with Fury defeating him back in 2015, and the two never having a rematch. The fight has all the potential to be a fight located in Saudi Arabia with a big pay day likely for both.

"Rumours have it that a trilogy fight against Usyk can be expected. However, considering the champ’s superiority, it may not be that easy to draw interest in another encounter between the pair."

What Next for Usyk?

On his way to his 38th anniversary next month, without a doubt, one can say the fighter who has become an all-time great has nothing to prove. He will likely face the winner of the IBF Heavyweight title fight between Daniel Dubois and Joseph Parker.

Parker is a difficult prospect, but Dubois will likely retain his title to set up a rematch with Usyk. He defeated Dubois back in August 2023 but was very lucky having been knocked down in round 5 but the shot deemed to be a low blow and Usyk giving multiple minutes to recover.

Usyk would knock out Dubois in the 9th round, but Dubois has shown his quality and would once again cause Usyk problems.

Tyson Fury has a lot to think about following his defeat to Usyk. If he continues to fight, there are a couple of potential fights he could take or he could retire for good. Either way he will go down as one of the best heavyweights of all time.
