Following the most recent international break. Lee Carsley’s time as interim England head coach officially came to an end with German Thomas Tuchel set to take charge of the England national team on the 1st of January. Carsley was experimental with his squads and teams during his time as manager, handing out debuts to many young players that he had coached during his time as England Under 21 manager. Carsley was in charge of England’s UEFA Nations League and done exactly what would have been set out for him to do, gain promotion back into the A section of the UEFA Nations League. Let us now take a look at England’s results during Lee Carsley’s time in charge as well as examine if his short time in charge was a success.

England’s Nations League Results

As mentioned, England gained promotion from their UEFA Nations League group finishing top of league B group two with rest of the group consisting of Greece, Republic of Ireland and Finland, all teams they would be expected to beat. Lee Carsley’s first game in charge was ironically against the nation he played for on 40 occasions, the Republic of Ireland in the AVIVA Stadium in Dublin. Goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish gave Carsley a debut 0-2 win. Lee Carsley’s first match at England’s home of Wembley Stadium would be against Finland.

It would be a mixed performance by England but they did run out 2-0 winners with a Harry Kane double. Matchday 3 of the UEFA Nations League would prove to be a forgetful one for Lee Carsley. He took a risk with his lineup for this game, playing without a recognised striker, instead having Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham play as a strike partnership, while Cole Palmer surprisingly partnered Declan Rice in midfield, with Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon on the wings, a very attacking side by Carsley. This would prove to be England’s undoing on this day as they lost 1-2 at home to a much improved Greece side, with Pavlidis scoring a 94th minute winner after Bellingham had equalised in the 87th minute.

England then had to travel to Helsinki to face Finland and needed a response and this is exactly what Carsley needed with his side winning 1-3 with goals from Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander Arnold and Declan Rice putting England 0-3 in front before a late consolation goal from Finnish defender Arttu Hoskonen. Carsley’s last two games in charge saw him hand out debuts and saw multiple players get their first goals for their countries as England won 0-3 away at Greece through goals from Ollie Watkins and Curtis Jones as well as an own goal from Odysseas Vlachodimos. Carsley’s final game in charge was the same as his first, against the Republic of Ireland, where they ran out 5-0 winners with goals from Harry Kane, Anthony Gordon, Conor Gallagher, Jarrod Bowen and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, after a red card to Irish defender Liam Scales.

"Lee Carsley’s time as interim manager of England can be seen to be a success. He gained promotion from League B of the UEFA Nations League to League A of the competition."

Was it a success?

Carsley’s time in charge of England was a strange one because of its interim basis, so it was always coming to an end. Carsley did what he needed to do however, and that was gain promotion back to League A of the UEFA Nations League at the first attempt following relegation in their last campaign. Lee Carsley also handed out 8 debuts during his interim spell with these being Curtis Jones, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Noni Madueke, Tino Livramento, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White, Angel Gomes and Lewis Hall. In England’s 5-0 win versus Ireland, 4 players scored their first ever England goals in the same game for the first time since 1930 with these being Gordon, Gallagher, Bowen and Harwood-Bellis.

Lee Carsley’s time as interim manager of England can be seen to be a success. He gained promotion from League B of the UEFA Nations League to League A of the competition. He also handed 8 players their debuts which adds to his success in charge, as these players are now ready and available to new manager Thomas Tuchel. Lee Carsley should be very proud of his time in charge of England and he will now return to his role as under 21 England manager, which will only help England in the long run.
