The Grand National, one of the biggest horse races in the world, took place last Saturday and I Am Maximus wrote his name in horse racing history by coming out on top. This is not the end of the big horse races as on the 20th of April the Scottish Grand National will take place at the Ayr Racecourse, and this is who I think will go on to come out of top.

🏇 Scottish Grand National 2024 Betting Preview

This Grade 3 National Hunt steeplechase race is open to horses that are five years or older, and it has been run at the Ayr Racecourse in Ayrshire since 1966. It is three miles, seven furlongs and 176 yards long, and the horses and jockeys need to navigate 27 fences in order to complete the race.

The first Scottish Grand National was run in 1867 and was won by The Elk, while last year's edition was won by Kitty's Light, who finished 5th in last week's Grand National. Below I will take a look at three horses who I believe have the best chance of going on to win the 2024 Scottish Grand National. You will also find the odds that are being offered by some top British bookies.

1️⃣Macdermott

MacDermott has jumped to the top of the odds table thanks to his victory at Fairyhouse at the beginning of April. His jumping was a little sticky at times, but he dominated the proceedings from the off. It was his first race over three miles on some testing ground, and he took to it like a duck to water. He is going to keep on improving, which is not good news for those horses that will come up against him.

This six-year-old bay gelding has run in nine races in his career, picking up two wins and two places. While this is not really anything to write home about, it is clear that he has bags of potential.

2️⃣Anglers Crag

This nine-year-old black gelding has become a bit of a winning machine since he joined the Brian Ellison stable. He has won all four races since then, including a tough race in the Eider Chase at Newcastle in his last outing. That was his first race over such a distance, and he had very few issues throughout. Okay, he jumped the second last fence poorly but got over it and went on to win. This season he has had 11 runs, and he has won five and placed in three of them.

3️⃣ Stay Away Fay

The seven-year-old bay gelding is definitely one of the class acts in the 2024 Scottish Grand National field, with his win in last season's Albert Bartlett in Cheltenham being one of his stand-out performances to date. He put in a solid performance in his penultimate race to finish in third place in the Cotswold Chase, but he pulled up in his last race, which is probably the main reason why he is not the favourite.

Stay Away Fay looks custom-built for this type of racing, and he will not be bothered by the conditions on offer. This season, from eight races, he has won four and placed in two.

🏆 Scottish Grand National Prediction

Like with the Grand National event, it is not easy to predict the winner of this race as there are a good number of runners who have a good chance of coming out on top. Some might just punt for the favourite and hope for the best, but my money will be on Stay Away Fay.

Yes, he pulled up during the Brown Advisory at Cheltenham event, but I am not going to hold that against him as we all have bad days at work. He is still a top-class horse, and his jumping technique alongside his staying power will give him a very good chance of winning this race. His failure in his last race has actually helped us out as he now has longer odds that we can try and take advantage of.

My 2024 Scottish Grand National Prediction: Stay Away Fay to win.

⭐ Scottish Grand National Betting Tips

Now that I have given you my top pick for the 2024 Scottish Grand National, I will finish off by giving you some top tips to keep in mind when you are thinking about which horse to put your hard-earned money on.

Pay Attention to Age

You should always check out the age of a horse because certain races are better suited for particular-aged horses. For instance, regarding the Scottish Grand National, nine of the last 11 winners were aged between seven and ten. Thus, when you are selecting your winner, I suggest that you do not buck the trend and bet on a horse that falls into the aforementioned age category.

Weight is Also Important

The handicap system is in place to create a more level playing field. Thus, the more of a favourite a horse is, the heavier the weight they will need to carry. When we check out previous Scottish Grand National weight trends, we see that ten of the previous 11 victors have had to carry between 10st 0lbs and 11st 3lbs. So, once again, I suggest that you stick to horses that fall into this weight handicap when picking your champion.

Check Out Recent Form

Check out a horse's recent form before you go ahead and bet on them to win. You would not bet on a football team that is on a bad losing streak, so why would you put money on an underperforming horse? Horses that have been falling consistently should be removed from your thought processes. Form is one reason why I have backed Stay Away Fay to win - he has won 50% of the races he has run in, which is a really good return.
