History of the Newmarket Racecourse

The first race at Newmarket was recorded when James I was on the throne of England. The racetrack was founded back in 1636. Nearly three decades later, in 1665, the Newmarket Town Plate was inaugurated by Charles II and in 1671 he became the only reigning monarch to win a horse race. King Charles often attended horse races at Newmarket Heath alongside his brother, James II. The first recorded race took place in 1622 between horses that were owned by the Marquess of Buckingham and Lord Salisbury.
Until 1744, the two biggest races run at this course were the Town Plate and King’s Plate. In 1744, two more Plates were added – one was a horse race for 5-year-olds carrying 9 stone, while the other was a four-mile race open to anyone. At the time, formal Newmarket races only happened once in April and once in October. In 1753, another spring meeting was added, and by 1840 there were 7 yearly meetings.
- Craven Meeting – A weeklong festival starting on Easter Monday
- 1st Spring Meeting – A weeklong meeting starting Easter Monday fortnight
- 2nd Spring Meeting – A weeklong festival starting on Easter Monday month
- July Meeting – A couple of days, starting on the 10th of July
- 1 October Meeting – A weeklong meeting starting on the Monday before October’s first Thursday
- 2 October Meeting – A weeklong meeting starting on the Monday before October’s third Thursday
- Houghton Meeting – A couple of days of racing that starts two weeks after the 2nd October meeting
As we mentioned in the introduction, the Newmarket Racecourse has two courses, which are the Rowley Mile Course and the July Course. Both of these are galloping tracks that are only used for Flat racing, with each one having a capacity of a little over 20,000 – although these numbers are rarely reached. There is a third track, the Round Course, but this track is only used for the Newmarket Town Plate once a year.
The Rowley Mile is used for spring and autumn racing, and is where most of the Group 1 races that take place at Newmarket are raced, which includes the aforementioned 1000 and 2000 Guineas. Due to the fact that the track is wide, it is able to host events like the Cesarewitch Handicap and the Cambridgeshire Handicap, which both have a field size of 35.
The July Course, on the other hand, hosts races in the summer, with just two of the races being Group 1 races – the Falmouth Stakes and the July Cup, both being run during the July Festival. In 2008, this track also hosted a number of other big races from the Ebor Festival because the racetrack at York was flooded. The Grade 1 races that were run here that year were the Nunthorpe, Yorkshire Oaks, and the Juddmonte International.
In recent years a few events have marked the spirits of horse racing fans.
- During the 2011 2000 guineas, Frankel revealed himself as a special horse by establishing an insurmountable lead which gained him the winning position. This marked one of the greatest performances ever seen on the newmarket racecourse.
- In 2016, the racecourse celebrated its 350th birthday in conjunction with the town of Newmarket.
- 2022 saw a few major changes which include the scheduling of the QIPCO Guineas festival for three days as opposed to two days before.
For 2023, the newmarket racecourse will host the July season from Thursday 13th to Saturday 15th which will be the Darley July Cup Day. As usual, it will be run over six furlongs and contested by the best horses mainly from the UK, Australia, and the USA.
Betting on Newmarket Races
The Grade 1 races that are run at Newmarket are really interesting to watch, but you can increase the interest levels tenfold by betting on the action. When it comes to betting on Newmarket races, if you just jump right in and bet on a horse without doing your research, then you are just going to end up losing money. This is actually one of the worst strategies that you can have.
Below we have provided you with some highly useful betting tips that you should remember when you are betting on any race that is happening at Newmarket. Some of the following tips are useful for other venues and races. In other words, they are universal tips.
Trainers Are Vital
Those who are new to the horse racing betting world will probably not give much thought as to who trained the horses that they are going to be betting on. However, not pay attention to the trainer is a silly thing to do as having the best trainer could actually be the difference between a horse having a chance of being victorious or a horse that has no chance.
For instance, when it comes to the big Newmarket races, Aidan O’Brien has been one of the most successful trainers in recent years. Out of the last six 1000 Guineas, the winning horse has been one that was trained by O’Brien. If this was not enough, he has also had plenty of success in the 2000 Guineas too, with three consecutive wins in 2017, 2018, and 2019. In both races, he has collected a total of 17 winners.
Other trainers that have had recent success in these prestigious races include the likes of Michael Moroney, James Doyle, Oisin Murphy, and Richard Hannon Jr. Whenever you like a horse and are thinking about placing a bet on it, you should do yourself a favour and check out who they are trained by, and then take the time to research the trainer to see how well their horses have done. If the trainer has had little success, then we suggest you choose another horse.
The Jockey is Important Too
We think that trainers are more important than the jockeys, but we are certainly not going to sit here and tell you that jockeys hold no importance, because they do. The jockeys job is to ensure that the horse they are riding remains 100% focused during the race. Therefore, when betting on the big races at Newmarket, you do not want to make the mistake of completely ignoring the jockeys. You should take a look at how jockeys have done in the big races down the years to see if some have dominated.
One jockey that has done well at the two big races that take place on this course each year is Ryan Moore. He has won the 1000 Guineas four times and the 2000 Guineas two times. Then, of course, there is Franke Detorri, who has also won the 1000 Guineas four times and the 2000 Guineas three times.
Once again, before you place a bet on any race that takes place at Newmarket, you have to take a bit of times to do some research and find out as much as you can about the jockey that is going to be riding the horse you want to bet on. You should take a look at their form and how they have done on this track throughout the years. The more information that you are able to gather, the higher your odds of winning will be.
Always Look at Past Trends
Before you jump in and start placing bets, you will be doing yourself a big favour if you take the time to look at trends from previous races. By taking a look at some previous trends, you can get a very good idea as to what could happen in the next race. Below we have given you some of the major trends for the 1,000 Guineas and the 2,000 Guineas.
1,000 Guineas

- Four of the previous twelve champions won on their previous run before this race, while seven of them had run a race in the last 31 days.
- Nine of the previous twelve winners had run at least once at Newmarket, while four of them had won at least one race at this venue.
- Eleven of the last twelve winners had at least one run over 8 furlongs, while four had managed at least one win over eight furlongs.

2000 Guineas Stake
This race is open to horses that are 3 years old. It is also 1 mile long, and has a prize purse of £400,000, with the winner getting a crisp quarter of a million.
- Five of the previous twelve winners were favourites, while seven of them were in the top three.
- Ten of the previous twelve winners won their previous races, while eight of them had last run more than 189 days prior.
- Six of the previous twelve champions had one previous race at Newmarket, while three had at least one win at Newmarket.
- Six of the last twelve winners had at least one previous run over eight furlongs, while five had at least one win over eight furlongs.

When we are ranking a bookie, our experts will take all the above in consideration. However, there are plenty of other things that we need to analyse if we are to give a fair ranking. At the end of the day, our aim is to provide as fair a ranking as possible. We are now going to take the time to look at these other criteria now.
Newmarket Free Bets and Bonuses
With regards to competitiveness, you will not come across many industries that are as fiercely competitive as the world of online gambling. This competitiveness is annoying for the bookmakers, but it is great for us sports bettors because it is what forces bookies to offer attractive bonuses and promotions in order to try and stand out and attract new punters. Any bookmaker that offers a poor bonus is one that will go out of business quickly since nobody will open an account with them.
Bonuses are not all created equally, and they never will be. Therefore, whether you are looking for betting or oonline casino bonuses it is of the utmost importance that you take the time to do a bit of research before you go ahead and sign up with a bookie that you like the look of. Below we have provided you with four bookies that currently offer some of the best bonuses around at the moment. We are not telling you that you need to sign up with one of these sports betting sites, but you will have an awesome betting experience if you opt to do so.
It is very important for us to highlight the fact that bookies alter their bonuses regularly in order to try and stand out. Therefore, we absolutely cannot guarantee that the bonuses we just spoke about will be available whenever you visit their sites. We apologise for any inconvenience this might cause, but we do not have control over this as we do not have enough spare time on our hands to constantly check. It is really important that you read all the T&Cs before you accept a bonus. By reading the T&Cs, you can out about the wagering requirements in play, the time frame you have to compete the, the min and max deposit limits in play, and whether there are payment method restrictions in place. Reading each T&C thoroughly is something that will ensure you do not end up accidentally forfeiting your bonus.

Popular Racing Bets to Place at Newmarket
Now we will look at some popular horse racing bet types that you can place when betting at Newmarket.
Win: This is the simplest kind of bet out there because all you need to do is try to select the horse that will go on to win the race. If the horse that you select does not finish first, then you will lose your wager. It does not get any simpler than that.
Forecast: With a forecast bet, you choose two runners and then decide what position they will finish in out of first and second. The horses that you select have to finish in the exact position that you guessed. If your two horses come in first and second but in the opposite order to what you predicted, you will lose your wage. This is a tricky bet to get right, and this is indicated in the odds that your bookmaker will offer.
Reverse forecast: This is pretty similar to the above bet, but the main difference is that this one does not require you to get the finishing positions spot on. You just need to select two horses and if they come first and second in any order, you will win your bet. Since this type of wager is easier than the forecast bet, the odds will not be as high.
Tricast: If you think your luck is in, then you should make a tricast bet. With a tricast bet, you choose three horses as well as the positions that they will finish. To win your wager, your chosen horses have to finish in the positions that you predicted. Due to how tricky this type of bet is, your profit margins can be very big if you manage to get them right.
Each way: With regards to each way wagers, you are basically placing two wagers at once. The first bet is that your selected horse wins the race, while your second bet is that your horse to place. A place will often be second or third, but many bookies now are paying out place bets for fourth, fifth and even sixth. The odds on offer for your horse finishing in one of the places is usually a fifth of the odds you were offered for your chosen horse to win.
Where to Find the Best Newmarket Race Odds
Odds also vary between bookmakers because having better odds than a rival is one of the main ways that a bookmaker stays ahead of their competitors. A bookmaker that offers better odds than their closest rivals will see many more customers sign up with them. A bookmaker that offers poor odds is one that nobody will bother signing up with, and they will end up going out of business quickly.
Before you open an account with a bookmaker, you should do a bit of research to ensure that you will be getting the best value for your money. When you spend your money on something else, you probably double check to make sure you are getting good value for your hard-earned cash, so why would you not do the same thing when gambling? After all, you are still spending your money.
Let us now have a look at an example that highlights how important it is to find the best odds. Let us pretend that you are going to place a bet on the 1000 Guineas, and you have picked a horse to bet on. You look at the odds with one bookie and see that they have them at odds of 7.00 to win. You look at the odds that another bookie has for the same horse and see that they have odds of 9.00 to win. If you make a £10 wager with the first bookie and your horse wins, you will make a £60 profit. If you make a £10 wager with the second bookie and your horse wins, you will make an £80 profit. So, you would have missed out on £20 if you bet with the first bookie. Now, imagine missing out on £20 with every winning bet.
So, what bookmakers do we recommend when it comes to Newmarket racing odds? Well, these four bookies always offer their customers odds that you will not be able to complain about:
- Ladbrokes
- Unibet
- Play
- Spreadex
Newmarket Races Live Betting
When online bookmakers came into being back in the 90s, sports betting fans did not have the possibility of placing a live bet. If you happen to be new to the sports betting world, a live bet is a bet that you place when an event is still being played out. For example, if you bet on Manchester United to score the next goal when there is 60 minutes on the clock, you have made a live bet as there are still 30 minutes left. However, the 90s were a long time ago and we have come a long way since then, especially with regards to technology. As a result, you will not find a bookmaker that does not offer live betting nowadays.
Also known as in-play betting, live betting on newmarket races can be a great way to get real-time stats that may be helpful in determining which horses have the highest winning probability. While watching the game, you’ll be able to adjust your newmarket bet based on factors like the jockey’s performance and the conditions of the track. The most common in-play bets in horse racing include each-ways, place bets, outright winner, and forecast bets.
Bookmakers know that sports betting fans like place live wagers and they are aware that if they do not offer a live arena that they will miss out on plenty of customers. However, although the majority of bookmakers have a live betting arena, they have not all been created the same. If you want to make live wagers on horse racing at Newmarket, it is worth looking at the following bookies:
- Betiton
- Netbet
- Karamba
- 10bet
This Newmarket guide has given you plenty of valuable information so that you can get the most from your Newmarket betting. All that is left for us to say is, good luck!
