On December 4th at 15:00 GMT, Al Thumama Stadium in Doha will host the third leg of the Round of 16, pitting France against Poland. As you know, France is the winner of Group D and Poland is the runner-up in Group C. The winner of Sunday's match will go to the quarterfinals, where they will play England or Senegal, and the loser will be directly eliminated.
To be honest, there is hardly any football prediction that promises Poland a victory against the 2018 World Cup champions. But then again, the 2022 World Cup has already proven that you can never be sure what will happen. As the saying goes, expect the unexpected. Let's take a look at the signs that suggest how this game might play out.
France vs Poland Preview
It is not yet clear whether France v Poland will be broadcast on BBC 1 or ITV 1. Just do a quick check before the match to know which channel to tune in to. In the following two tables, we have summarized the results of the matches in Group C and Group D, which can show the current form of the teams and how they would perform in their next test.
Group C
Team | Matches Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Goal Difference | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Argentina | 3 | 2 | 0 | 1 | +3 | 6 |
Poland | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 4 |
Mexico | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -1 | 4 |
Saudi Arabia | 3 | 1 | 0 | 2 | -2 | 3 |
Group D
Team | Matches Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Goal Difference | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
France | 3 | 2 | 0 | 1 | +3 | 6 |
Australia | 3 | 2 | 0 | 1 | -1 | 6 |
Tunisia | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 4 |
Denmark | 3 | 0 | 1 | 2 | -2 | 1 |
🏠 France Form and Team News
France topped Group D with two wins and one loss from their three matches. Predictably, they beat Australia 4-1 and Denmark couldn't live up to the hype in their match, losing to France 2-1. Because of these two easy victories, the French looked forward to the test against Tunisia with too much confidence, knowing that their place in the round of 16 was already guaranteed. French manager Didier Deschamps even changed the entire squad to give all players the chance to play at the World Cup. As a result, Tunisia won 1-0, but it was not enough to qualify for the next round.
For this round of 16 match, Deschamps is happy that the players have no injuries or suspensions, so he will have the freedom to distribute the positions as he sees fit. If they manage to get past Poland and qualify for the quarterfinals, J. Kounde is the only player to watch out for as he has a yellow card.
France starting Lineup
Deschamps chose a 4-3-3 configuration for their game against Tunisia, but we anticipate that for their matches against Poland, they will switch back to their 4-2-3-1 formation from their play against Denmark. Additionally, we anticipate that the starting lineup will closely resemble the starting XI from that game. Here is our hypothetical starting lineup for France:
- H. Loris
- T. Hernández
- D. Upamecano
- R. Varane
- J. Koundé
- A. Rabiot
- A. Tchouaméni
- O. Dembélé
- A. Griezmann
- K. Mbappe
- O. Giroud
It should come as no surprise that France is one of the favourites to win the 2022 World Cup after taking a look at this starting lineup. However, France lacks the depth that other teams, like England, have off the bench, so if they have a few injuries as the competition goes on, it would hurt their hopes of defending their title.
⭐ France Players to Watch
As we mentioned above, the France starting XI is filled with talented players. Here are three of them who you and the Polish players should pay particular attention to when they face off on Sunday.
- Theo Hernández: Hernández ranks among the finest when it comes to entertaining left-backs. He is not only a skilled defender, but his direct attacking style may also lead to a lot of problems. Hernández enjoys forward movement, as evidenced by the 20 goals he has scored for AC Milan in 111 games, whilst some defenders are scared to move forward with the ball. In this Round of 16 match, we are excited to watch him sprint up and down the wings.
- Antoine Griezmann: The Atletico Madrid attacker is an important member of the France team and controls their action when they are on the offensive. With 42 goals in 113 appearances for his country, he averages about one goal every three games. He has received 113 caps for his country. Although he has yet to score for France in this World Cup, there is a good likelihood that he will score if Poland give him the chance.
- Kylian Mbappe: PSG's Kylian Mbappe, one of the most gifted players in the world right now, is a France player who the Polish defenders will be particularly mindful of. He is a complete nightmare for any defender to contain because of his pace, strength, and technical skill. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he has already scored three goals, so it wouldn't surprise us if he added to this total against Poland. Nonetheless, it's likely that the Poles would keep every player positioned behind the ball in an effort to wear out the French team.
☍ Poland Form and Team News
The table for Group C shows that Poland takes the second place, albeit by a small margin. The first match that the Poles played at the 2022 World Cup was against Mexico, which they ended in a 0-0 draw. Saudi Arabia was the second opponent they faced and managed to win 2-0 thanks to errors on the part of the Saudis. On the eve of their third match against Argentina, Poland was aware that if it ended with a draw or a narrow loss, it would probably be able to dislodge Mexico from the second place in Group C. Therefore, the goal of the Poles in this match was not to win, but to manage to pass between the drops to reach the eliminations. The fact that they didn't perform at their best hardly matters to them as they are still competing and let's be honest, their chances against Argentina weren't great at all.
Although the Poles' pseudo-football managed to secure them a spot in the knockouts and give them one last chance to progress, we doubt there are football predictions that would give Poland a chance against the 2018 World Cup champions and make it to the last 16. The only way this can happen is if the French are overconfident, the Poles unnerve them with their negative football and take the game to penalties when no one can be sure what will happen. But let's face it, those are too many ifs.
Prior to this crucial match against the French, Poland manager Czeslaw Michniewicz does not have any injuries or suspensions, but M. Cash, J. Kiwior, A. Milik, and G. Krychowiak are all on a yellow card, so they are aware that another caution will result in their exclusion from the next match, should they advance. In all honesty though, it's unlikely that another player will receive a yellow card because a limited Poland team against France would be the shock of shocks.
Poland starting Lineup
The Polish team deployed a 4-4-2 formation against Argentina, and we anticipate them to do the same against France this weekend. Here is our expected Polish starting lineup to face the French:
- W. Szczesny
- B. Bereszynski
- J. Kiwior
- K. Glik
- M. Cash
- P. Frankowski
- G. Krychowiak
- K. Bielik
- P. Zielinski
- K. Swiderski
- R. Lewandowski
⭐ Poland Players to Watch
Three Polish players you should pay particular attention to throughout their Saturday match against France are listed below:
- Matty Cash: The right-back for Aston Villa, who qualified for Poland through his mother but is an adopted Pole as you can see by his short name, has started for Poland because of his defensive skills. He played excellent defence against Argentina to help limit the damage and get to the Round of 16, and he'll be aiming to do the same against a very good France offence. He frequently enjoys a run up the wing, but his manager will probably tell him not to cross the halfway point.
- Robert Lewandowski: The Barcelona forward is by far Poland's greatest player, but it's likely that he will play against France as an extra defender in this Round of 16 match. He has played in 137 international games and scored 77 goals to date. He joined Barcelona in 2022, and in the 14 games he has since played, he has scored 13 goals. The player can score goals for fun, and if given the opportunity to do so against France, he must employ his predatory tendencies to ensure that he strikes.
- Wojciech Szczęsny: Without a doubt, Szczęsny has been Poland's finest player at this World Cup, which says a great deal about the style of game they have been playing. He has made some crucial stops, including two from penalties, and if Poland is successful in frustrating France and forcing a sudden-death shootout, he might have a major impact on Poland's advancement to the quarterfinals. He will have a lot to do first though as France pelts the Poland goal.

🥇 Who Will Win? France vs Poland Prediction
Whether it is sports betting or simply what the result will be, for us there is only one winner and that is France. Since the start of the World Cup, Poland have shown that their squad is very limited and in this match their tactic, if it can be called a tactic at all, is likely to be defensive with attempts to frustrate the opposition and possibly score on the counter. As we doubt, they will succeed in this endeavour, they will look to take the match to penalties and leave their 2022 World Cup fate in the hands of their goalkeeper. Even with this development of the France vs Poland match, there is no doubt that the French will come out victorious and their attacking abilities will surely shine.
Our match prediction: France to win.
