History of the Champions League

Champions League Logo

The first time that the champions of two different European leagues met occurred when Sunderland took on Heart of Midlothian in 1895 and won 5-3. This match tool place at Tynecastle Park and was known as the 1985 World Championship, although this was a bit of a light-hearted name.

The Challenge Cup was the first ever pan-European competition between clubs in Austria and Hungary. The Mitropa Cup, which was modelled off the Challenge Cup, came in being in 1927 and was played between clubs in central Europe. The Coupe des Nations, which came into being in 1927, was the first attempt at creating a cup the champions of different European countries. This competition took place in Geneva, and brought ten champions together from across Europe - the Hungarian team Ujpest went on to lift the trophy.

In 1948, the South American Championship of Champions took place and Gabriel Hanot, an editor from L'Équipe heard about how much of a success it was and started proposing that Europe has a similar competition. Hanot eventually managed to convince UEFA to create such a tournament, and it came into being in 1955 and was called the European Champion Clubs' Cup.

The inaugural edition of this tournament was played in 1955-56 and there were 16 different participants. The first ever European Cup match was played on the 4th September 1955 between Partizan and Sporting CP and it ended 3-3. João Baptista Martins, a striker for Sporting CP, has the honour of scoring the first European Cup goal. The first final was played at the Parc des Princes and saw Real Madrid take on Stade Reims. The Spanish team won 4-3 thanks to goals from Marquitos, Alfredo Di Di Stéfano and a brace from Héctor Rial. Real Madrid would go on to win the next four editions, meaning that they won five European Cup titles in a row, which is a record that stands to this day.

In the 1967-68 edition, Manchester United overcame Benfica 4-1 to be the first English side to lift the European Cup. This final was a decade after the tragic Munich air disaster that killed eight United players. In 1968-69, Ajax were the first Dutch team to make it to the final of the European Cup, but they lost 4-1 to Italian giants AC Milan, who claimed their second title. The first Dutch winners were Feyenoord, who beat Celtic in the 1969-70 final.

The 1970-71 European Cup saw a number of changes such as the introduction of penalty shoot-outs and the away goal rule being adapted so that it was relevant in all rounds apart from the final. Panathinaikos became the first Greek side to make it to the final, but they lost to Ajax, who would go on to win it three times in a row. From 1974 until 1976, Bayern Munich lifted the trophy three times in a row. Liverpool became the second English team to win it in 1977, while Nottingham Forest won it in 1979 and 1980, and Aston Villa won it in 1982.

The European Cup was originally a straight knockout tournament that was open only to teams that won their domestic leagues, but in 1992 a round-robin group stage was added and multiple entrants from certain European countries were allowed. To add to this, it changed its name to the UEFA Champions League, which we still know it as to this day. It has been expanded since then, and while many European national leagues can only enter their champions, the best leagues in Europe such as the English Premier League, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga, and the Spanish La Liga can enter four teams.

You can find out more about the format of this tournament and the qualification procedure in the next section of this guide.

Qualification and Format for the UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions league starts with 32 teams competing in a double round-robin group stage. There is a live draw that sees the qualified teams get put into a group with three other teams, meaning that each team will play six matches in the group stage of the competition. The top two teams from each of the eight groups will go through to the knockout stage of the competition, while the team that finished third will drop down into the UEFA Europa League. The draw is seeded, while teams from the same country cannot play in the same group.

In the last 16, the team that wins the group will play a runner-up from one of the other groups, and teams that are from the same country can still not be drawn together. From the last eight onwards, the draw is completely random and teams from the same association can play against each other.

The group stage takes place from September until December, while the last 16 begins in February. The knockout matches are a two-legged format, but the final is just one game. The final of this prestigious competition is played at the end of May or the beginning of June.

The number of teams that an association can send to the UEFA Champions League depends on their UEFA coefficients. These coefficients are based on how well the clubs that represent each association have done over the last five Champions League and Europa League seasons. An association with a higher coefficient can send more teams to the Champions League and their representatives will have to compete in fewer or no qualification rounds. In 2005/06, Artmedia Bratislava and Liverpool became

the first two teams to make it to the group stage after taking part in all of the three qualifying rounds. Barcelona and Real Madrid have the record for the most group stage appearances with 25, followed closely by Bayern and Porto on 24.

As well as sporting criteria, a club has to be licensed by their national association in order to take part in the Champions League. To receive a license, the club has to meet particular stadium, finance, and infrastructure requirements.

The Prize Money

Although featuring just European teams, which are arguably the world's best teams anyway, the popularity of this competition goes way beyond the European continent.

Football clubs want to take part in the Champions League because they want to pit themselves against some of the best players in the world such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. However, another reason why teams want to participate in this competition is that there is plenty of prize money to be earned. As of the 2021-22 Champions League, the amount of prize money paid to participating clubs is:

  • Play-off round: €5,000,000
  • Group match win: €2,800,000
  • Group match draw: €900,000
  • Round of 16: €9,600,000
  • Quarter-finals: €10,600,000
  • Semi-finals: €12,500,000
  • Runners-up: €15,500,000
  • Champions: €20,000,000

The Most Successful Clubs in the Champions League

When it comes to UEFA Champions League success, there is no other club that can come close to competing with Real Madrid as they have 14 titles to their name. AC Milan are the next most successful Champions League club with seven trophies under their belts, while Bayern Munich and Liverpool both have six titles. Barcelona have won this competition five times, Ajax have won it 4 times, Manchester United and Inter Milan have won it three times, while Juventus, Benfica, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, and Porto have won it twice. Celtic, Hamburger SV, Steaua Bucharest, Marseille, Borussia Dortmund, Feyenoord, Aston Villa, PSV Eindhoven, and Red Star Belgrade have all won it once.

Champions League Final Betting and Other Popular Markets to Bet on

When it comes to Champions League betting offers, or betting on any football competition for that matter, there will be a variety of markets that you can put your money on, but some are more popular than others. Below we are going to take a look at some of the more popular ones that you can find at the best football betting sites.

Match betting: With this kind of bet, what you have to do is predict which team will win a certain match. If the team that you select goes on to win the match, you will land yourself a profit. If the team that you select goes on to lose the game, then you will lose your stake. It is as simple as that.

To lift the trophy: With this wager, you bet on the team that you think will be celebrating with the trophy held aloft come May. Many who enjoy Champions League betting outright like to place their wagers before the season begins as this is when there is plenty of value available. However, we should stress that there is still plenty of value for you to find if you make this bet when the competition has started.

Top scorer: Strikers are always looking for bragging rights, so there is always a competitive race for Champions League Golden Boot. You will be able to bet on the player that you think will go on to win the trophy, and you before you place your bet you should think about factors such as conversion rate, expected goals, and shots per match since this can increase your chances of getting a winner.

Next team to score: With such a bet, you are trying to predict the team that will go on to score the match's next goal. The odds for this market can be affected by a variety of factors such as whether one of the teams has had a player sent off and which team seems to have the momentum in the game. If you are watching a match, then this is a bet you should consider making since you will have a good idea as to who is more likely to score the next goal.

Next scorer: With this market, you bet on a player that you believe will score the game's next goal. This is a pretty tricky bet to predict, so the odds will always be quite enticing. If you think that there will not be a next scorer, then you can go for the "no next goalscorer" option.

Both teams to score: With this type of wager, you can choose between yes and no. If you believe that both teams will score at least one goal, click the former option. If you believe that only one of the teams will score, then hit the latter option.

Player to bet booked: Tempers can flare in close Champions League games, so it is not rare to see a flurry of yellows or even a red card or two. If you are watching a game and you see that there is one player that is reaching boiling point, you should consider betting on him to get booked.

Over/Under goals: Most bookies will give their customers the option of betting on over or under 2.5 goals in a Champions League game. If you think there will be at least 3 goals in a game, put your money on over. If you believe that there will be fewer than 3 goals in a match, put your money on under.

Handicap: Sometimes a team will have low odds because they are huge favourites to win a match or they will have really high odds because they are huge underdogs. In both cases, this is where the handicap betting option comes in handy as you can give a team a disadvantage or advantage before a match starts to lower or increase the odds. For example, if Bayern Munich are playing Benfica, they will probably have odds of 1.40 to win. You can then give PSG a 2-goal advantage to improve their odds, meaning that Bayern would have to overcome a hypothetical deficit to win your bet.

Betting on Champions League Draw

Once the Champions League draw has taken place, you might see some markets that you are eager to go ahead and bet on. However, before you go ahead and start placing bets on the Champions League draw, we highly recommend that you take the time to study the groups that have been drawn and try and find the value bets and take a note of them. By value bets, we mean a bet where the outcome has a much higher chance of happening than the odds offered by the bookmaker would suggest. By training yourself to find the value bets, you can get the most out of your gambling experience. We will provide you with more useful Champions League betting tips later on in this article.

Champions League Betting Offers: The Best Places for Champions League Free Bets

Earlier on we told you that sports betting sites will offer their punters bonuses and promos that they can use on big football tournaments such as the Champions League. This gives you the chance to make some juicy bets without having to risk any of your own money. The world of online gambling is really competitive, which is why bookmakers have to offer their customers such bonuses when signing up. When a new punter opens an account with a bookie, they we want them to stick around for a long period of time, and the best way to ensure that this happens is by offering different bonuses and promos.

Not all bonuses are created equally, so we have taken the time to help you out by doing some research and finding those bookies that currently offer bonuses that give your Champions League free bets. Bookies have to consistently update bonuses and promotions to keep things fresh and to stay one step ahead of their competitors, so we cannot guarantee that the bonuses you are about to read about below are still available. We do update our pages regularly, but things change so quickly in this industry that it can be hard to keep up.

888sport: If you opt to open an account with 888sport, then there is a £100 bonus that you can take advantage of. You will be able to use this bonus on whatever you like, but why not use it on some Champions League betting offers?

BetBull: If you believe that BetBull is the bookmaker that you want to sign up with, then you can claim a £50 bonus after you have completed the registration process. You can use this bonus money on whatever Champions League market you like.

10Bet: If you sign up with 10Bet, then they also have a £50 Welcome Bonus that you can use on whatever Champions League betting markets they have available.

Tonybet: If you decide that TonyBet is the bookmaker that you want to register with, then they currently have a £100 free bet bonus that you can claim to use on a variety of markets for the Champions League.

N.B. Whenever you use bonuses and promotions from a sportsbook, there is one thing we suggest you do before you go ahead and start making bets and that is to read the different T&Cs that apply. There will not be a single bonus that you can claim that does not have a variety of T&CS, and by reading them all you can learn about the wagering requirements, the number of days you have to fulfill them, and whether there are certain banking options that restrict you from claiming the bonus.

Champions League Betting Odds

Odds are changing all of the time because sportsbooks know that if they offer their customers betting odds Champions League that are better than whatever odds their rivals are offering, then they stand a really good chance of attracting more new customers. We humans are suckers for bargains, so with regard to sports betting you should do some research to find the bookies that are offering some of the best odds around. The Champions League teams can make a lot of money from the competition, and you can make a nice profit if you use the best odds when betting on Champions League.

To prove this, we are now going to provide you with an example. Let us pretend that PSG are taking on AC Milan and PSG have odds of 2.30 to win with one bookmaker and odds of 2.50 to win with another. If you put a tenner on PSG to win with bookmaker A, then you will land a profit of £13 if they go on to win the game, while the same stake with bookmaker B would see you land a profit of £15 if they went on to win. Now, losing £2 from one bet is not the end of the world, but if you lose £2 with every winning bet that you make, then it will soon add up, we can guarantee that.

So, what sports betting sites have the best odds for betting on the Champions League? Well, when it comes to great odds for the Champions league, we would recommend looking at these bookies:

Champions League Match Betting: Placing Live Bets

Sports betting made the jump to the Internet close to three decades ago, and this was a really great move for sports bettors as we now have the option of Champions League final betting without even having to get off our sofa. However, back in those days, live betting was not an option, meaning that if you wanted to bet on Champions League matches, you needed to do so before the match started.

Placing live bets is something that sports bettors like to do, and this is why you will struggle to find a bookie that does not offer any type of live betting to their punters. Bookmakers are aware that if they do not offer live betting, they will lose plenty of custom. We are sure that you will want to make live Champions League bets at times, so below you can find four bookies that we feel offer quality live gambling.

When you are on the lookout for a sportsbook with a very good live betting platform, what are some of the major things that you need to look out for? Well, to start with, a live betting arena can only be as good as the markets and odds that they made available. A bookmaker that offers only a few live markets will bore customers pretty quickly. To add to this, above we informed you that it is vital to bet with the best odds around, and this is a rule that still applies when you are making live bets. You will not be disappointed by the live betting arenas that the four bookies that we listed above have on offer.

Football Betting Tips for the Champions League

When it comes to betting on the Champions League, you can dive in at the deep end and start making as many bets as you like, but if this happens to be your best betting strategy, do not be too surprised when you start to lose more than you win. We are now going to provide you with some very helpful betting tips Champions League that we recommend you familiarise yourself with before you bet on any matches.

Look at Previous Matches between the Teams

Football teams will always have those teams that they play well against and those teams that they always seem to struggle against for some reason. Therefore, before you go ahead and start betting with your hard-earned money on the line, you should make use of Google and see what type of record your chosen team has against their opponents. If they have a poor recent record, then we suggest that you spend your money somewhere else. However, it is important that you pay attention only to the most recent stats since teams are changing all the time. When it comes to Champions League tips betting, this is one of the most important.

Do Not Always Rule Out the Underdog

The Champions League can be a very competitive competition, especially as you go deeper into the tournament. Therefore, it is not that unusual to see an underdog get a positive result against a team that the bookies deemed as clear favourites. So, if you see an underdog that you like the look of, do some research and if the stats back up your thinking, do not be afraid to put some money on them.

Home Advantage Can be Key

When you are considering betting on a team to be victorious, it is vital to take home advantage into consideration. Teams will usually play much better when at home since most of the fans will be backing the and cheering them on to win. Even the best sides can struggle when they have thousands of fans on their back, laughing at every mistake. However, there are some teams that play well when not at home, so you should check out a team's away performances before you place a bet.

Form is Important

Form is important in any sport, and this is something that every sports fan is well aware of. Those who have watched a lot of football in their lives will have seen really good players and team struggle when are of form and confidence. For example, the bookmakers might view Real Madrid as big favourites to beat AC Milan, but if they are going through a patch of bad form and Milan are in good form, placing your money on a Real win is a bad move. This is another one of the more important Champions League final betting tips.

Conclusion: Should You Place Bets on the Champions League?

We really do recommend that you try out Champions League betting if you have not already done so before. If you have, you will already know why we recommend it, but if you are new to it then we recommend it because it is one of the biggest football tournaments in the world, and there is a lot of entertainment to be had from placing bets on it. There is not much that can beat watching some of the world's best players go head-to-head while also having the chance to win some extra money. We believe that the information that we have given you in this comprehensive guide can be of great use when it comes to betting on the Champions League.

How Does a Team Qualify for the Champions League?

A team can qualify for this prestigious competition by finishing in a designated Champions League qualification spot in their domestic league. For example, in the English Premier League and the Serie A, the top four teams all qualify for the Champions League. The number of teams that a football association can send to the Champions League depends on their coefficient, and their coefficient is based on how well their teams have performed in the Champions League and Europa League over the last five season.

There are two joint favourites to win the Champions League, and these are Paris Saint Germain and Manchester City. The best bookies have them both at odds of 4.50 to go and win the Champions League trophy in May 2023.

Who is Most Likely to Win the Champions League in 2023?

While we understand why the bookmakers have PSG and City as the two favourites to win the trophy, we actually feel that Bayern Munich have a really good chance of lifting the trophy. However, Real Madrid is never to be overlooked as they have proven times without number, the Champions League is their playground.

Real Madrid is the team that has won the Champions League the most times as they have 14 titles under their belts. This is seven more than Ac Milan, who are the second most successful team.
