What is The Eurovision Song Contest?
The Eurovision Song Contest is a beloved competition uniting many different countries (mostly) in Europe. This international song contest is watched by millions around the world and shares some of the best and worst songs of the year. It was first introduced in 1956 and there has been a competition held every year, barring 2020. While many people think this is only a competition for the countries in Europe, this is in fact not true. The contest welcomes all countries that are members of the European Broadcasting Union, which is why we see entries from Australia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan to name a few.
Each country has three minutes to perform a song that has not been performed in public or publicly released more than seven months before the competition. Traditionally, six countries advance to the Grand Final. These are the Eurovision top 5, also known as the ‘Big 5’ which includes the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, and the hosting country. The remaining countries take part in two Semi-Final performances to qualify for the final round. In total, 26 countries perform and for 2023, the Grand Final is on the 14th of May.
It's customary that the winning country will be the next host of the competition. After Måneskin’s win last year, the song contest will be held in Turin, Italy.
